Interior Design Q&A: Retaining Room Identity in Small Homes

I am buying a new construction, which has granite on the kitchen countertops, slate in the family room fireplace (which is a continuous space with the kitchen), marble in the powder room and tile in the master bath, which is upstairs. Since it is a small house (2200 sq. ft), would replacing all the above-mentioned stone with the same granite tile (from the kitchen countertop, which is light brown) make the house look bigger? Would this then also make each room lose its identity? Mainly, would the same tile in the Master bath look odd? Any help is much appreciated. Thanks.

Some say the more texture the better! As long as you enjoy the materials (the different marble, tile, etc.), they can add visual interest to the home. If you think any one of the products “jump out” at you, you may want to consider changing them. Differences in flooring and countertop materials add personality to each individual room. You may want to use paint color or fabric to give unity to the entire home. Generally, you would be fine using the same granite in the kitchen and the master bath, because it is a neutral color it would still leave you with many other decorating options.
