Interior Design Q&A: Matching Cabinets with Dark Appliances
May 6, 2015 | 7:20 pmQ. I am desperately trying to decide what color cabinets to put in our “to be built” home. We have black appliances? I like the dark wood and my husband likes the light maple? Do you have a suggestion?
A. If you are trying to decide between the two options mentioned above, we would start by considering what “style” or “mood” you are trying to portray in your home. The darker woods tend to have a more traditional look and feel to them, while the light maple cabinets could add a more contemporary and modern feel to your kitchen. Consumers now have a wide variety of door styles, finishes, and hardware options, which will also help you achieve different looks. One option, which is very common now, is to have one finish on the wall cabinets and another on the island cabinets (if you are using an island). Another option might be to try one finish on the upper wall cabinets and another on the base cabinets. This may be the best way to incorporate your favorite finishes, as well as your husband’s. Because of the wide range of options available to consumers, we would suggest starting your design process by looking through kitchen design magazines and pulling out those pictures that interest you and your husband. Once you have compiled a variety of pictures, pull out those things that are common throughout and start your design using those items as your foundation. Good luck – do not hesitate to contact us should you need assistance.
